Deadwood

Deadwood is an important element in wooded habitats. Most forests and woodlands contain deadwood. It may occur as dead or rotting branches on a living tree, standing dead trees (known as snags), stumps, logs, or other fallen timber. Deadwood may be large, small, wet, dry, old, recent, coniferous or deciduous. Most woodpeckers need deadwood to thrive. Deadwood is essential habitat for many saproxylic insects which are important prey for many woodpecker species. Woodpeckers also use deadwood for nesting sites or as drumming posts. In Hungary, the White-backed Woodpecker is only found in forests with high levels of deadwood.  One of the forthcoming tasks of our working group will be to identify all the forests with deadwood ecosystems in Hungary and encourage their protection as habitats for White-backed Woodpeckers and other deadwood dependent wildlife.

White-backed Woodpecker Working Group

In January 2021 we began to organise a specialist group within the Hungarian Woodpecker Working Group that would focus on the White-backed Woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos). Our first task was to conduct a nationwide survey in the spring of 2021 to establish more precisely where this species occurs and approximately how many breeding pairs there are. The survey continued into 2022 and 2023.

Aggasztó mértékben lecsökkent a fecskék száma

Javítsunk a helyzetükön és tegyünk értük közösen!

Szomorú tény, hogy a tavasszal hazatérő fecskék száma egyre alacsonyabb, és a számukra megfelelő fészkelőhelyek száma fogyatkozik évről-évre. A háztáji állattartás fokozatosan tűnik el, emellett óriási problémát jelentenek a gondatlanság, tudatlanság és kényelmi ürügyek miatti fészekpusztítások, hiszen mindez a sikeres fiókanevelések számát csökkenti.
