Creation of a Habitat Network – LIFE Safehaven
The project “Creating a safe haven network for Pannonian sodic wetlands and threatened meadow birds” (101215279 – LIFE24 – NAT – HU – SAFEHAVENLIFE) will start in 2025. The “Pannonian salt steppes and marshes (1530*)” are a priority habitat of the European Union, found only in the Carpathian Basin. This group includes soda pans, which are shallow, temporary wetlands with high salt content and alkaline pH. These habitats are among the most vulnerable ecosystems in Europe, and many are now nearly irreversibly degraded. With support from the EU LIFE Programme, MME will restore four soda lakes in the Southern Great Plain from 2025 to 2031. This project, in partnership with the Kiskunság National Park Directorate and the Municipality of Sándorfalva, will restore over 1,000 hectares of habitat.
